Back to School !Brookwood Village News

Volume 21    Issue 11    September 2001

Yes! It’s back to School time and we wish all those taking their first steps along the road of Academe and all those moving up to their next level of education, be it Class, Secondary or College, a very enjoyable time. Do you keep a diary? Why not? You are in the happiest days of your life and you will need the memories for your best selling autobiography!!

We’re running a little early this month to accommodate timetables and hit the street before the activities have passed into history! To make up for this, October will be a little late this year as the Editor is deserting his post -- temporarily! Not having an August issue has meant that some items are a little late in being published and, without an August issue, we have rather more than our usual A4 two-sided Newsletter. So, we’ve done it again and offer you 3 pages!

Don’t forget to look in the Notice Board outside the Memorial Hall for information on events in the Village. By the way, it didn’t take the Graffiti Vandal long to visit the site and spray and scratch it.

THE EDITOR’S DELIBERATE MISTAKE FOR JULY WAS to give David Silsby’s address wrongly. David is at 48 Heath Drive. We apologize to the householder in no. 33 and trust that any subscriptions to the Scout Group 200 Club have reached the right destination. Still time by the way to join in so, try again, send or deliver your cheque in favour of 1st Brookwood Scout Group to 48 Heath Drive!

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH. It hath come about! Sgt. Nick Elton advises that Brookwood and Knaphill now have their very own "beat" officer. He is Mark Parry who has been on the force and not unknown to our area for a good few years and will be a familiar sight in the Village from now on. Please, please talk to him even just to say "Hallo"! If you have any questions or need advice on matters relevant to the Police have a word with Mark. He is also contactable at Woking Police Station on (01483) 761991, extension 5144. But don’t let’s get carried away. He won’t be available 24 hours a day nor hovering just round the corner when you want him. If we don’t use our front line contact, we shall lose him and remember, the constant cry from the public for better policing has always been "more Bobbies on the Beat" so it’s up to us. We shall be giving him a copy of the Newsletter to keep him up with the Village gossip!

Here are some general points to put you in the picture

Garages seldom have more than the simplest locks and if you have to keep valuable equipment in the garage, it is worth putting good security locks on them.

WOKING HOSPICE. Dorothy and Ron Follett have received a letter from John Quinn Fund-Raising Manager for Woking Hospice thanking them and everyone involved in raising the astounding sum of £450 at their Coffee Morning at end June. "You must have had a lot of generous people around", he says. We should all of course be thanking Dorothy and Ron for their willingness to hold the event in their house and garden and making us all welcome! Well done everyone who supported them by attending and by helping with the preparations and providing cakes and other gifts for the stalls. See you all again next time!

1st BROOKWOOD SCOUT GROUP will wash your car for you on Saturday 8th September in the Memorial Halls car park between 9.30 am and 1.00 pm in return for a suitable donation. Refreshments and Newspapers available while you wait! And if that’s not enough, "Big Bill White and the White Offs" who played at the Village Fete in June will be playing again, this time in the Memorial Hall on SATURDAY 6TH OCTOBER in aid of the Scout Group. So mosey on down with your friends and party the evening away from 8.00 pm to 11.00 pm! Tickets are £6 from Barbara Lugton on 476774 or Hilary Gower on 476304 or Michelle Mealin on 473781. Price includes food! Bring your own drinks. 16 year olds and over – no upper age limit!

"SAWADDEE". You don’t know what that means do you?! Well, get familiar with it because events connected with it are going to figure strongly in the Village over the next twelve months! Actually, it’s Thai for "Welcome" and is the greeting extended to some 30,000 Scouts who will be attending the 20th World Scouting Jamboree in Thailand from 28th December 2002 to 7th January 2003. "So what" did you say? WELL, WE HAVE A SCOUT FROM 1ST BROOKWOOD PICKED TO GO ALONG AND REPRESENT WOKING, SURREY AND THE UNITED KINGDOM!!! No small honour for Alex Fellowes-Freeman and us Scouts in Brookwood are immensely proud that he will be representing US! Here’s the rub! Alex has to raise a considerable share of the £3,000 it costs to get him there fully equipped so quite a few fund-raising events will need to be held to meet the commitment. Parents will contribute a share but it is part of the Scouting ethic that the boy has to show initiative and fund-raise too. BE PREPARED to support this young man in his adventure of a lifetime! (Yes, the Editor is very strongly prejudiced in this matter!).

The winners of the front garden, tubs and hanging basket competition will be published in October

This month’s sponsor wants you all to know (and wants you to attend!) that

In good time for Christmas!

THE EDITOR thanks everyone for their best wishes on the occasion of his 21st Birthday - well, actually, it was his 70th! He’s never before had so many cards nor a birthday that lasted a whole week! Had the Memorial Hall been larger, he could have happily had many more friends at his party but alas, it couldn’t be. However, if you missed out at 70, you will be in at 80! Let’s hope he is!

Yes! We have no hanging baskets!

BVA contacted WBC to ask why and back came the answer " we can’t afford them!" In their attempts to cut back expenditure, hanging baskets were a victim. It looks unlikely that they will come on show again until WBC wins the lottery! Apparently, sponsors finance all the roundabouts and other floral displays we see about us. Well, the message is loud and clear – we must think about doing something along the same lines. We already have the posts and it would be a shame as well as being rather ridiculous to leave them unadorned in 2002. So, early in the New Year, we shall be looking for sponsors whether business or private individuals to beat WBC at their own game! We have some very good basket gardeners who might volunteer their services and some residents might care to contribute to the cost. More on this in January.

Mrs. G. France

had a special birthday too recently and has asked us to say thank you on her behalf. She was particularly pleased with her vouchers and thanks go to the participating local traders for their thoughtfulness. We do this with pleasure!

And another sponsor we said we would try to squeeze in!

Sadly, we report three deaths in the Village. Firstly in July, at age 88, Ernest Jennerway of Connaught Road, sadly followed by his wife, Dot, in August. We offer out condolences to the family. Also in July we lost Jim Hunter, of Connaught Road at the young age of 57. Jim came to Brookwood from South Africa about three years ago and again we give our sympathy to his family for this untimely loss.
