Brookwood Village News

October 2005

Dear Reader, I just wanted to add my thanks to Mac for the newsletter over the years and also for his support and advice in preparing this issue. Thanks also to Pip Calvert, Sue Thornton and Fiona Martin who have all volunteered to help with the newsletter on future issues. If you have any items for inclusion, news, events, ideas for the village, or want to sponsor an issue then please get in touch via the village email or pass the item to any committee member.

Wheely Bins!Wheelie Bins R Coming !!
BVA have been informed of a Recycling Roadshow by Woking Borough Council at Brookwood Memorial Hall this will be between 5 pm and 8 pm on 6th October. The committee urge all residents that have worries about how this will affect them to attend. I believe that there are smaller bins available if you ask. BVA and Councillor Goldenberg will be attending.
Brookwood School
It was good to see the school children back where they should be after the Summer break - but what about the traffic !!! It has been nice to see the bigger kids from Winston Churchill school collecting their brothers and sisters, many of them had been pupils at Brookwood until July - it must have felt rather strange for them. We should be proud of our village school and teachers. Top marks in the OFSTED report this year and a reception class of 26 new babes ready to learn. Lets hope that the local education authority allow us to keep Brookwood School for many years to come - judging from the prams and infants around Brookwood I don't think we should worry too much.
Brookwood Ashes ?????
Brookwood CC played Pirbright CC at Pirbright during September. It was a re-match, and I hear it turned into a bit of a grudge match !!! Pirbright beat Brookwood at their last meeting and Brookwood were determined to win this time. Pirbright went in first to bat and were all out for 125 runs. Brookwood needed 126 runs to win. They got 126 for 3 wickets and won by 7 wickets. Apparently Pirbright took their bat and ball home. Ask Tony at Fulks for a full match report !!! Can't wait till next season.

Eric TheobaldCommunity Officer Eric Theobald

The BVA Committee were very sad to learn of the sudden death of Eric whilst on holiday with his family. Eric was 55 and leaves his wife Edna and daughters Tracey and Julie. He was well liked in Brookwood and will be missed by all his friends.
Goodbye - Thanks - Hello !!!
Neighbourhood bobby PC 52 Craig Matthews is moving on to take up a role as Youth Affairs Officer for Woking Borough. Brookwood thanks Craig for all his hard work and we wish him well in his move. We welcome PC Tina Spencer as our area specialist and look forward to meeting her walking around Brookwood. I will try to get a pic for the next issue.

Message from your locally elected Councillor - Philip Goldenberg
Thanks to the BVA for allowing me space for a Village update. Headlines follow on key issues I'm working on:
  • Pirbright Rail Arch has had a coat of paint, but I am still pushing for an on-demand traffic light pedestrian phase - I have convened a meeting to try to progress this;
  • I am spending an ENORMOUS amount of time trying to solve the problems of Sheets Heath Bridge, working in conjunction with the residents of both Sheets Heath and Sheets Heath Lane;
  • after pushing hard for the establishment of a Borough Council Working Group to look into the long-term future of Brookwood Cemetery, one has been formed and I am chairing it;
  • you should by now have received a letter from the Borough Council saying that wheeled bins are on their way. I have tried to ensure that there will be more emphasis on customer care than the dreadful pilot project in Goldsworth Park. I hope any local resident with queries will attend the Brookwood Roadshow on 6 October at Brookwood Memorial Hall.

  • Finally, I join in the universal sadness at the death of our PCSO Eric Theobald - he was a friend to all, whose work was widely appreciated. He will be sadly missed.

    Lost and Found
    Fiona Martin has found a silver bracelet on the pavement in Connaught Road close to Brookwood Primary School. If you have lost one please see Nisha at the Post Office to claim it.
    Kids Christmas Party
    Saturday 10th December at 2pm.

    BVA want to organise a christmas party at the Village Memorial Hall for the local village children. Watch this space and be prepared to volunteer. More details next month.

    IT'S YOUR VILLAGE
    Was That your Car ????
    Angela reports that Sheets Heath Bridge was closed on a Sunday morning recently by the police. A car (Black and new according to my wife !!!) was being towed back onto the bridge from the wooded area. It appeared to have overshot the bridge and fallen down the ravine into the woods. It is quite a drop and I'll bet the occupants got quite a shock.
    Did the Police helicopter wake you recently in the early hours?? Looking for lost kids apparently. All found safe thank goodness.
    Did you know?
    More than 50% of people in the world have never made or received a telephone call.
    Try telling that to my daughter!!!
