Brookwood Village News
November 2005
Dear Readers, I would like to thank those of you that made your kind comments about my first editorial undertaking; it's very nice to know that the newsletter was read and appreciated. I also want to thank Susan, Ruth, Fiona and Angela, who all met during the month to discuss help with the further development of the Newsletter and help with the BVA. Watch this space - as they say. Your Village Needs You
Wheeled Bins Meeting
Nearly 100 interested residents attended WBC's wheeled bin road show last month to find out more information ahead of the distribution of new bins. To help local residents the BVA committee have approached a company and sourced a discount garden digester which eats anything!!! It will be available to villagers through the BVA. We hope to have one on show at the AGM and orders can be made there. Contact Neil Thomas

Brookwood Canal Festival
I am delighted to be able to inform you that the Woking Canal festival will move from central Woking next year to take place in Brookwood over the May Bank holiday.
Woking Canal Festival

Up to 100 longboats will gather between the A322 and the Hermitage basin and will use the stretch of canal along the old hospital site. The BVA will work closely with the canal festival organisers and WBC. I will update you with details in future.

The BVA wishes to invite children in Brookwood to our Christmas Party.

We have booked Jezter Fetzer a highly recommended magician and entertainer who will lead the entertainment. Entry will be ticket only. To join in the fun, parents of children up to the age of 11 should contact Angie - on 852410 or email. We will need to have some idea of numbers by 21st November for refreshments and to allow Father Christmas to make the children's gifts!
We need local face painters, sandwich and bun makers and other helpers.

Locally elected Surrey County Councillor for St John's and Brookwood - Elizabeth Compton writes;
Thank you for allowing me the space to update you on the areas that I have been working, on your behalf:

  • The continued problem of Sheets Heath Bridge is still on my agenda -more meetings are in hand.

  • I hope to make more progress on the Pirbright Arch. Local County and Borough councillors have asked for a follow up study to determine a safe route across the road for pedestrians and cyclists.

  • The centenary of Brookwood School in 2006 must be properly celebrated. I am delighted to have helped to obtain £3,800 Woking Local Committee funds towards numerous celebratory activities;

  • The Basingstoke Canal Society and the Inland Waterways Association are holding a Campaign Rally at Brookwood on the 27-29 May Bank Holiday weekend next year. I am working to make this a great success, both as your local County Councillor and as vice chairman of the Canal Joint Management Committee. We shall need plenty of water -fairly recently I secured Local Committee funding towards the St. Johns back pumping project.

  • I too am very interested in the future of Brookwood Cemetery , in fact I have relatives buried there!

  • Brookwood School comes under the microscope!
    But still comes out on top.

    A local reader took me to task about my praise over Brookwood School's OFSTED report.
    I checked my copy of the report again and am happy with my editorial, but thanks for your comments. Whilst on the subject of the school, with the help of the parents and friends the school have come out on top in the Peacocks schools awards and have won £3,000 worth of sports equipment. Thanks to all parents and friends for their help.

    Connaught Road Speedway
    Rumours that SCC have agreed plans to turn Connaught Road into a speedway circuit have been denied - only joking! Though some drivers appear to think that it is true. There have been a number of accidents and near misses recently with cars and benches being destroyed. Your committee have been discussing the continued problem of speeding in the village. I am sure this problem will be raised at the AGM and also Pirbright's recent attempt to ban all HGV's from Pirbright!!! Where do you think that the HGV's will go??
