We contacted WBC regarding the various “changes” introduced to the road markings following the re-surfacing of Brookwood Crossroads. A number of residents were somewhat and justifiably worried that the new markings put motorists in danger rather than helped them through the intersection. WBC were very good and quickly put matters right. Basically, it seems that the contractor used by WBC didn't pay enough attention to the drawings provided or had an elastic tape measure! We hope all is now well. We shall soon find out by examining the amount of broken glass around the area!

1st Brookwood Scout Group says “THANK YOU” to all residents and others who supported their recent Car Wash (raised £355) and also donated, collected, sorted, sold, bought, cleared up and dumped for their Jumble Sale and Spring Fair.
Scouting is still the largest youth organisation in the UK and we are fortunate in having a strong Group here in Brookwood. The enthusiasm of the boys is matched by that of its Leaders and that's why we do so well! Who said the Editor was prejudiced?!

The e mail addresses are in the booklet that accompanied the Council Tax statement. THEY WORK! Well, they did on the three occasions the Editor sent emails so it's worth a try!

WOKING COMMUNITY HOSPITAL

In last month's issue we inadvertently said that the Spring Fair on 19th May was to be in aid of Woking Hospice. Worthy cause though that may be, this fund-raising event is in fact in aid of Woking Community Hospital. Editor's apologies to all concerned and more details of the Spring Fair are below.

Friends of Woking Community Hospital
will be holding their major fund raising event of the year, their Spring Fair, at the Hospital in Heathside Road, Woking on Saturday 19th May from 12.00 noon until 3.00 pm.
The plant stall will be open in the Hospital Car Park for the sale of plants and shrubs from 11.00 am.
There will be a Raffle, Tombola, Books, Bric-a-Brac, Cakes and Produce, Boutique and Glamour Stalls. There will be plenty of fun for youngsters too with a facepainter and a bouncy castle! Musical entertainment will be provided by the Bishop David Brown School Steel Band who have played at many venues including The Royal Albert Hall, The Royal Tournament and Westminster Abbey.

All profits go to provide extra amenities and comforts at the Hospital that are not funded by the NHS.

OLIVER AND JEAN GUEST THANK EVERYONE FOR THEIR CONGRATULATIONS ON THE CELEBRATION OF THEIR DIAMOND WEDDING. A LOVELY CARD FROM HER MAJESTY, VOUCHERS FROM BVA ,BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY THE GOOD WISHES OF ALL THEIR FRIENDS AND FAMILY IN BROOKWOOD AND ELSEWHERE!

Sue Richardson whose black and white cat “Tolstoy” went missing from her Mum and Dad's house in Connaught Crescent, where he was lodging due to a house move, would like to say “Thank You” to everyone who helped with their many sightings and phone calls, especially Kathy and her children who were instrumental in his final capture! Sue would also like to thank Nisha of the Post Office for displaying his photograph on a poster for the entire two months of his escapade! This cat is obviously of a literary mind like his namesake and penned the following poem to his “Mother” on Mothers' Day!

Because today is Mothers' Day I think the time has come To say I'm really sorry for going on the run. I didn't mean to leave you just thought I'd have a fling I didn't know the pain I'd cause by doing such a thing. I quickly learned the big wide world is not a place to be When far from home and all alone, no Mother's face to see.
…………………………………………….
Then - MIRACLE ! to my relief This lady warm and kind Gave me some fish and whilst I ate your number she did find. The rest you know you came for me I had no wish to run I've had enough of freedom now for many years to come!
We had to cut the full message due to lack of room! (Full text on application to Editor!)
Just think! A namesake of this cat wrote War and Peace! The next literary cat that goes missing had better stay so!
(Don't mean it!)

WHO'S IN CHARGE?
Everyone should have received the public consultation leaflet from WBC asking for views on the new political management structure for Woking. It's up to you to make your choice and it is important that you do so. An apathetic approach to this could result in a form of local government that you really do not want and with no chance to do much about it!
Do not just leave WBC to exercise the option they prefer. Keep the democracy and vote for the option you see as giving us the best service and the best control over our affairs. The BVA committee have voted for option 3 en bloc.

Alas, the Derby Day outing had to be abandoned as not enough of you wanted to participate. Ideas for other trips have also been shelved as it is also doubtful that they would receive any better response. Of course, if YOU have any bright ideas for a special event that you would like the Village to hold, let BVA know.

Brookwood Waterside?
Brookwood W.I.
It was open house at Brookwood W.I.'s April meeting as the ladies were free to invite a friend. This enabled some of the husbands to attend and find out what really goes on in the small Memorial Hall during the third Tuesday evening of each month! Apart from the traditional Cake and Tea, Mrs. Ann Chance entertained the meeting with her hilarious “Other fings wot I 'ave dun” talk. It was great. So gentlemen, anyone for a M.I? And if you didn't go, sir, nor your wife, make her go along in May and you will both have a fine evening!

Brookwood Memorial Halls
Actually, no one except the Committee members turned up at the AGM so they duly elected each other to the various offices and to the Management Committee.
There is no truth in the rumour that the Committee are thinking of selling the land and property to a developer! Would anyone notice?
