Brookwood Village News

Volume 25   Issue 6   March 2005

We didn't find out until too late to tell you that BBC Radio 4 were broadcasting a half hour programme on 7th February about Brookwood Cemetery. Mainly concerned with the old railway funeral service it nevertheless had some interesting snippets in it even though most of us probably know a good deal about it's past. If anyone would like to listen to it, Mac Fryatt taped it so call him. Did you know that there are Italian servicemen buried there in the German plot and are being exhumed and re-buried in the Italian plot and some even repatriated to Italy?

The large Memorial Hall now has a new stage floor. Using a residue of funds granted by SCC last year for replacing the Committee rooms and kitchen windows. A wooden panel floor has been laid. It may well lead to a traditional linoleum/vinyl surface in due course but it is very smart and unlike some other years, none of the Brookwood Children's Drama Group got splinters in their posteriors participating in the panto. By the way, congratulations to Yvonne Craven and her cast and team of helpers on another successful event for the children to share in.

Did you see in the paper that a local resident had money and a free-standing safe stolen by two men posing as water board employees? There have been plenty of warnings to all and sundry about fictitious workmen and it remains the case that you should let no one enter your proper without proper identification on them. If in doubt that their ID is genuine, then refuse entry and ring the service the men claim to represent. And here's another point. Are these home safes worth having if they can be uplifted and spirited off with apparently little effort? One feels they are more an encouragement to burglars than a deterrent. We suggest you talk to our local Police if you are thinking of going this route and seek some good advice through them. And as we get into the gardening season, remember that spades, forks and may other garden tools make good crowbars when you haven't got a key so be sure to put yours away whenever you have done with them.

1st Brookwood Scout Group's super Jumble Sale will be on Saturday 23rd April from 10.30 am to 1.00 p.m. in the Brookwood Memorial Halls There will be bargains for everyone -clothing, books, toys, household, cakes & refreshments The Scouts will be collecting jumble from 6.30pm on Friday 22nd April from homes in Brookwood. Alternatively it would help us if you could bring your jumble to the small hall between 6.00pm and 9.30pm on Friday 22nd April. We are grateful for your donations of jumble, but would like saleable items only. We cannot take broken, dirty or damaged goods and would appreciate not being given them, as we have to pay for disposal. Our collectors may decline such items.
For large items please contact: Barbara Lugton -476774 or Roger James -476379

Now a lot of people do know that one of the biggest problems with Jumble Sales is disposing of the unwanted surplus when the sale is over. It is expensive to have to pay someone to cart it away and that tends to undermine the purpose of having it.' Regrettably quite a few absolute junk and broken items are handed out for collection or brought to the hall that should have been put straight into their owner's dustbins. It isn't really fair to dump them on the Scouts expecting them to take them to the dump for you. From this year on therefore, the Leaders will not collect any items seen to fit in this category and they ask your support and co-operation in not putting them out. Remember, the Scouts are not allowed by law to collect fridges and freezers (not even if they work) nor other dodgy electrical items either. We're very fond of our Beavers, Cubs and Scouts, not to say the Leaders too and we don't want any of them or of our customers getting overcharged, electrically! ! !
