Brookwood on the web! Yes! We are there! If you have internet access the site is: www.brookwood.org.uk

Lots of information about Brookwood and its activities and facilities. Have a peep!

Aha! Surrey County Council are having a little wriggle over the Basingstoke Canal! They have said that they are not taking over the administration of the Canal, only the Canal properties! The Basingstoke Canal Authority remains in charge of the day-to-day management. SCC are nonetheless adamant that they need £75 per annum for the "garden licence" which they say "represents good value for money when you consider that it provides a canal side frontage to your property". What rubbish! The canalside to the properties dates back to the building (or is it digging) of the canal in the 18th C and the subsequent building of the properties that adjoin it. Neither of these factors owes anything to SCC. They fondly hope all the residents involved will accept the new rate and if not, might like to make a donation to the Basingstoke Canal Authority. Of course, if you don’t live adjoining the canal, you are not affected – that is until they start to charge for access to the towpath! Yes, we are joking!! SCC has no intention of fencing their land but we won’t encourage you to ignore the licence and keep on feeding the ducks and swans. If you do, just don’t fall in, as we might not be allowed to trespass and rescue you! By the way, we wrote to Elizabeth Compton, our County Councillor, who fared no better in her enquiries and hopes those affected will feel that "the increased rent is not too excessive for the benefits conferred". The £75 is supposedly on a par with all other garden licences in Surrey. Some people must be unfortunate in having the Thames rolling past their properties and not the Basingstoke Canal! Let’s hope the clean-up of the canal now under way will show much improvement.

SAWASDEE! Don’t forget our Jamboree Scout is participating in a Car Wash fund-raising event at the Brookwood Memorial Halls on Saturday 9th March. DO make a donation to the Jamboree Fund! Starts at 0900 hrs and continues until every car in the neighbourhood is clean and every Scout soaking wet or 1.00 pm! Don’t leave it to the rain! It’s your turn to do a Good Turn!

THE BROOKWOOD FETE has been fixed for Saturday 29th June 2002 starting at 12 noon and ending at 3.00 pm. Local organisations were invited to a meeting late in February to learn the details but if you weren’t there give Mac Fryatt a call on 473246 and he will both put you in the picture and pass your details on to the Fete Committee.

VANDALS STRIKE AGAIN! The recreation ground was chosen for another car cremation in mid-February. The Fire Brigade were called in the dead of night and were able to deal with it. Then a Portaloo or Tardis type box appeared by the canal bridge. What we thought might be a variation in the increasing practice of dumping unwanted goods in public places appears to be a tool store for the canal workmen! But a more worrying occurrence is that some boys were seen trying to set fire to Sheets Heath. They ran off when approached but returned later and tried again only to be disturbed for a second time. The Fire Brigade attended. Although in some eyes a "clean-up" of the heath would not go amiss, it’s better to leave this to the experts and not have practices for Bonfire night. Please make sure your youngsters are not involved! It’s probably half-term boredom!

If you have not received a visit from a BVA subscription collector seeking your contribution of £2 for the whole family membership you soon will be! If you find a slip saying someone called while you were out, please but your £2 in an envelope with your name and address on it and hand it in at the post office.

DON’T PUT IT IN THE RED PILLAR BOX!!!

JUBILEE! BVA COMMITTEE MEMBERS AND REPRESENTATIVES will be asking if you will be around over the weekend of 1st – 4th June; are you interested in attending a Village event; are you willing to help organise. Speak up and let BVA know how you feel about having a Jubilee celebration in the Village.

THE COMMONWEALTH GAMES SHOOTING COMPETITIONS are being held on our very own Bisley Ranges in the Summer. The new Lord Roberts Centre presents a fantastic suite of facilities not only for the Games but also for any local resident who would like to use them. There is a fitness centre so you can get your weight down or your muscles up and there is a marvellous roller blade rink not only for just skating around but for "roller blade hockey" too. We will give you more info when it is available so look out for posters in the coming weeks. The Marketing Manager, Tom Redhead, is keen to develop good relations with the local Community and we can all benefit from this.

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH

Due to the recent Force restructuring, Nick Elton, who has been the Police Sergeant responsible for Brookwood and other local Villages is being transferred to look after Goldsworth Park and Horsell. Mark Parry has been promoted to Sergeant and will cover Brookwood and Knaphill. You can still talk to him even if he is now a Sergeant!

Only minor incidents, albeit aggravating for the victims, during the Jan / Feb period:

Amazingly, no one seems to have seen any of these events occurring. Police recommend you always shut your drive gates if you have them and put your car away in your garage if you have one - a garage we mean! CCTV could be an answer but may only tempt the yobbo’s to have a go at that too! Outside security lights may dissuade criminals from approaching your property but, if you do have them installed, make sure they don’t irritate a neighbour
