Volume 21 Issue 10 July 2001
Oh, what a fete it was! The weather can be officially described as atrocious but this seemed to make everyone work with a good spirit to overcome it! FOBS raised about £1,800 for the School and we should all give FOBS a cheer as they were responsible for organizing the fete (not the weather!) and we all had a good time didn’t we?! The Floats were out of this world—well they were supposed to be weren’t they—and it was difficult to pick the best. Humming and Ha’ing eventually gave the winner’s plaque to the Babes and Toddlers, otherwise known as Clangers, with everybody else second! Well done Jane Griffiths and her team! The fancy dress also gave the judges a headache but the winner Fiona Martin, the Iron Chicken (oven wrapped!), was superb for first place. (Don’t believe everything you see in the Woking News and Mail!). Nathan and Nicole Woods made a fine pair of green aliens in second place and
third place went to the Gemini twins, Charlotte and Lily Matthews, who were a vision in pink. FOBS would like to thank everyone who participated in the Fete and supported it on the day. It takes almost the whole intervening year to organize the annual Fete and it is good to have such strong support in the Village to back the efforts in aid of the local School.
If you are an Internet fan, then you have no doubt been to the Brookwood website and admired its construction and content! It’s all down to Mark Craven and we apologize to him for squeezing out the Internet reference that should have been in last month’s issue. So again, if you want your organisation on the site then give Mark the details of what, where, when, and contact names and addresses (include e-mail address if appropriate). His e-mail is: email or you can ring him on 480273 or write to him or use a runner with a note in a cleft stick just to show that computers haven’t taken over everything!
Congratulations to all those who managed to get to the Polls on 7th June and vote and we await delivery of all the manifesto goodies!
Well done everyone who contributed to Christian Aid Week in May! We managed a princely sum of £1,027.88 that will go to help the less fortunate people in this world. How lucky we are not to have to worry about where the next meal is coming from, a roof over our heads and medical care. And if we do, then our families, friends and neighbours can probably help out. In many countries, everyone is in the same parlous state and you don’t hold your breath waiting for the Government to come to your aid!
David Minns, our Minister at St. Saviour’s Church would like everyone to know that the church will be open throughout the day every Wednesday and Thursday from 9.15 am to 5.00 pm for anyone who wishes to go in to pray or be quiet or just have a look around. There will be a short service of prayer from 8.45 am to 9.15 am at which anyone is welcome.
If you live backing onto the Basingstoke Canal, beware the Stone Age mentally afflicted yobbos who pass along the towpath. Mrs. Curtis of Connaught Crescent has had panes of glass in her greenhouse broken several times now by stone throwers from across the water and it has cost her almost £90 to replace them. Thirty-five years the greenhouse has stood unmolested but this is the 21st Century so it’s all different!
1st Brookwood Scout Group’s 200 Club Draw fourth quarterly draw took place at their AGM on 18th May. First prize of £100 went to Henry Watson, second prize £50 to Pam James and the third prize £25 to June Eaton. The annual biggie prize of £500 was then drawn and was won by George Morris of Connaught Crescent! Nice one George!! If you want to support your local Scout Group (no stone throwers in that lot!) for £12 per year send a cheque for £12 in favour of 1st Brookwood Scout Group to David Silsby at 33, Heath Drive, Brookwood, Woking, Surrey.
And while we are Scouting, we are pleased to report that with the retirement of Sue Moore as Group Scout Leader, Bob White of Locks Wood has agreed to take on that role. Bob has managed the Cub Scout football team for a few years and achieved very good results. (We almost lost him to West Ham!). His wife Karen has been an Assistant with the Cub Pack for some time too so we add yet another Scouting family to the 1st Brookwood history book!
ALL THE W.I.’S A STAGE!
The Surrey Federation of Women’s Institutes Drama Festival competition already placed the playlet "A Bolt From The Blue" written and performed by Jean Gable and Geraldine Horn first and sent them off to take part in the National Federation’s Regional final on 22nd June at Hayward’s Heath. Supported by a number of Villagers and friends, they put on a marvellous performance in competition with three other County winners (Hampshire, Middlesex and West Sussex) and delighted us all by
WINNING!
All that’s left now is the National final - go to it girls!!
The Brookwood Village News Notice Board is now in situ. In other words it is back in its place! The board has been taken over by Brookwood Memorial Halls (BMH) who have refurbished it with the financial aid of BVA. If you want to put a notice in it, call Mac Fryatt, the Editor of the Newsletter, or Pauline Lock, Secretary of BVA, each of whom has a key and will post the posters. The only rules are BMH / BVA reserve the right to decide on acceptability. Adverts must be for specific events and not general and will be removed promptly after the event
Just as the Vicar said "Wilt thou take this woman to be your lawful wedded wife?" and, before the groom could answer "I will", the siren went and the announcement made "Red Alert!" Thus started the married life of Philip and Joan Bates of Riverside Close! He ignored the warning and now they will be celebrating 61 years of happily married life on 24th August. BVA vouchers are surely deserved as we missed their Diamond! Congratulations from the Village to you both!
You will be pleased to know that you can go off on holiday in August
and not miss the Newsletter—because there won’t be one!
We take a rest in that month and hope to catch up on the news in the September issue. Incidentally, if you have any copy or information you would like us to include, we need to have it as soon as it is available to you and not later than 23rd of any month so that the printer can fit it in to her busy work schedule. We would also welcome a few more sponsors at £10 per issue. These can be for specific businesses or activities or anonymous. We give free publicity to special anniversaries, births and marriages ‘cos we like a bit of gossip! Contact Mac Fryatt on 473246 to book a slot. Here’s a bit of gossip! A certain person is celebrating his 70th Birthday in August and is having a bit of a "do". If you live in Connaught Crescent near the Hall, be warned now that fireworks are expected so it should be spectacular as well as a little noisy for a short time about 9.30pm.
John & Jenny Beeney, who many will remember from their long sojourn in Brookwood once again turned up at the Village Fete. We had the following e-mail from them:
"It was good to see so many villagers at the fete last weekend, shame the weather wasn't better. Sally told me about the village website so have just been having a look. Seven years since we left Brookwood doesn't seem that long. If anyone is interested in looking my latest website is http://website.lineone.net/~hayling.cbs/. Also if anyone is interested I still do holidays and short breaks, next one being in September, four nights to Blackpool to see the illuminations. We will be picking up in Brookwood as Barbara & Pip Graves are going with us. Staying at the Dorchester seafront hotel bed breakfast and evening meal. If anyone is interested in more info. my number is 0239246 7348 or email <emile-beeney@lineone.net > Good luck to you all "
If you are wondering what the website is all about but don’t have access it’s to do with cage birds that John Beeney is very much into and there is a cage bird club on Hayling Island!
Neighbourhood Watch
A number of incidents took place in May which may ring a bell in your memory. If so ring the Police on 761991 or tell
Mac Fryatt who will pass the information on. Here we go:
This is our worst report for some time. A couple of pointers to remember. Firstly, don’t leave anything on show in your car when you park or leave it. It may not be a great loss but the bother of repairing the inevitable damage is much more aggravating! Secondly, garden sheds are ideal targets for criminals as they usually contain very good implements for breaking into the house — yours or the neighbours! Thirdly, if you see anything that looks suspicious or see something you know is wrong, report it to the Police straightaway so that any action can be taken while the trail is HOT! Of course, if the crime is actually happening, call 999 - don’t mess about!
Sadly we say goodbye to a lady who has lived in Brookwood for quite a number of years but has decided to take herself off to Sussex! Jan Hibberd it is and we shall miss her as she has been one of our Newsletter girls for a long time! We wish her well in her new home.
Anyone want to take on her Newsletter round—30 copies per month—call Mac Fryatt 473246.
Our sponsor this month is... Anonymous! A lady who also has lived in the Village for many a long year and gives her support wherever and whenever she can. We thank her for this support .
Finally, have a good holiday if that’s what you are doing in August and don’t go away without making sure your front garden, tubs and hanging baskets are ready for inspection!
