Brookwood Village News
January 2006

Dear Reader, Congratulations; You successfully made it through another Christmas to face 2006 and the year now stretches ahead with new opportunities and challenges. 2005 was a good year in the village with many people volunteering to help with the children's Christmas party and other village events. Well done, thanks to all involved and keep up the good work. I have included a sheet with the Newsletter containing information on all of the BVA committee members that I hope you will find interesting. One of them is a total fabrication. A prize if you can guess who? See you in 2006. Mike Peel - Editor. 01483 852410

Children’s Christmas Party
The BVA sponsored children’s party was a huge success just before Christmas with 75 local children attending. They were kept entertained by Jester Fester’s magic show and Father Christmas made a surprise visit and distributed presents as the finale. Angela would like to send huge thanks to Ruth and Fiona, to all the parents that supplied food, help, support and particularly to the ladies of the Woman's Institute that baked all of the wonderful cakes.

Pirbright bans HGVs !!
You may have read that SCC wants an HGV ban along Cemetery Pales which could have serious consequences for Brookwood. Members of the BVA committee met with Cllr Goldenberg who said that any ban would be ‘Over his dead body’. If you know Philip well then you know that if that is the case all traffic will have to use him as a round-a-bout !!! I will keep you posted.

A gentle reminder.
In the December newsletter we distributed envelopes for your BVA subscriptions. Many people dropped them off as requested but some homes have yet to respond. In the Christmas rush you may have mislaid your envelope. If you can’t find it then just pop your £3 subscription into any envelope, write your name, address and email address on the envelope and drop it off at either the Post Office or at Fulks butchers. Your subscription helps to fund the newsletter and village projects like the Christmas party.

BVA Chair Neil Thomas writes;
Thanks for all your help in 2005 which saw the BVA involved in many ways on behalf of the village with one of the most successful being the kids Christmas Party. It was an excellent occasion with 75 children from the village attending. All credit goes to Angie Grundy and her team who put this excellent event together.
It's an example of the sort of event that the BVA would like to put on in the course of the next year.
There are other challenges the BVA will get involved with on your behalf in 2006 such as opposing the intended doubling of low level flights over the village from Farnborough Airport and the proposed lorry ban in Pirbright, which could see all local lorries routed through our village.
On a far more positive note we would like to work to improve the village in a number of key areas:
• to continue to improve the safety of Connaught Road by keeping traffic speed down.
• to work to improve the look of the village centre and parking in Connaught Crescent & Heath Drive
• to be involved in the celebrations with Brookwood School Centenary and the Woking Canal Festival
• to provide further community events for the residents of Brookwood
• to improve facilities for the elderly and disabled in the village
• to campaign to ensure that Brookwood Country Park becomes a reality that we can all enjoy.
I look forward to seeing you all around the village and at our events in 2006. Continued thanks. Neil

Community ‘Spirit’- Goodbyes and Hello
We were very sad to learn from Peter and Bernadette Mahoney that Unwins had ceased trading just before Christmas. Peter said ‘I would like to thank the villagers for their custom and friendship over the last ten years. It has been a happy and good ten years, and we have valued their custom and friendship. We would love to stay here in the village, but who knows?’ We want to welcome Pinel and Batixa Patel who have taken over the local newsagents. We hope that your stay is long, happy and prosperous. We also say goodbye to Ricky at Buckingham car sales near Pirbright bridge and all of their staff who are moving to Mayford. Finally, I have also been told of another pending move that will rock the village but I am sworn to secrecy ????
Wheelie Bins - Again.
A number of people have reported rubbish in black bags being dumped in their bins leaving the bins overflowing. The collectors then refuse to take it all and leave the ‘cuckoos’ black bags on the floor. Please don’t !!!! Can I also remind you to remove your bins from the pavement as soon as possible as your bins cause obstructions for prams and wheelchairs. Please think of others !!!

Vandals Drain Canal
And also daub graffiti on the newly painted Pirbright bridge. Did you see anything ?

Tina and I would like to take this opportunity of wishing you a happy and crime free 2006. Brookwood has enjoyed a virtual crime/Incident free period over the past 3 months. One issue that has been of concern to local residents is that of problems with nuisance youths in the Brookwood area. (see above) Tina and I are continuing to pay attention to this area and are carrying out regular foot and vehicle patrols. If you have any issues of a Police nature or can help with local crime please contact Tina or myself on 0845 1252222 ext. 5126. Stay Safe
