Brookwood Village News
February 2006

Dear Reader, Isn't it cold !!! I hope that your central heating is OK? Soon be Spring. I keep being asked about my diet and keep fit regime that I promised before Christmas !!!! Well. There’s never any room with all the village news, but try this, it works for me; I find that if I stop eating for a month then the weight just falls off !!!!!! Congratulations go to Becca Rowland who was first to ring and tell me who the odd member of the BVA committee was. (and yes, there was only one) Becca wins a bottle of wine. You see - I wasn’t joking. Better luck next time. Angie and I have both been stopped and told ‘I'm sorry I haven’t paid my subscriptions yet because I don’t pass the Post Office’. If you haven't paid and would like a BVA member to collect the £3 from your house just give me a ring and a committee member will pop round to collect. Keep Warm. Mike Peel - Editor. 01483 852410
Brookwood Children's Drama Group - Cinderella
Yvonne Craven has asked me to thank everyone who helped at the recent pantomime. With 65 local children in the cast, every ounce of help was needed. Thanks also to all those who came to support the drama group. There were over a hundred people at all three performances and the weekend was a huge success. After the ball the ugly sisters have returned to normal to do their GCSE's, Cinderella is rehearsing for Oliver at SJB and Buttons is planning his debut as a film director for his Media Studies at Winston Churchill School. Well done to all and roll on next panto.
Evening all !! A house in Connaught Road was burgled between 5.45pm and 6pm on the 4th January. Two unknown offenders forced a lock on the front door and gained entry. They were then confronted by the victim and the first intruder stated his father had seen two males running away from the house and he was checking if everything was OK. He then encouraged the victim upstairs to check the rooms. The occupants handbag and approximately £2,000 was taken before they both ran off. The local constabulary were called and checked the area but nothing was found. Very frightening. For your own safety please ensure that external doors are secure and bolted at all times. Keep yourself safe and keep vigilant. …Remember … Crime can’t crack itself !!

Obituary: Eric Hamilton Brooks who died in December aged 97. Eric and the Brooks family lived at the Brookwood Hotel for 10 years from 1910. Eric joined the army at the start of WW2 and as a trained wireless operator he joined the Long Range Desert Group operating behind enemy lines in the Lybian desert. He was chosen by Col. David Sterling to join ‘L’ Detachment, from which the first SAS unit were formed. Col Vladimar Perianoff (Popski) recruited Eric to join his Private Army as a wireless operator and wrote about Eric in his book ‘Private Army’. Popski wrote about how he would seek Eric out whenever possible to have interesting conversations with him. My thanks to Eric’s family who sent me this article for the newsletter and who now live in Pirbright.

Dick Yates has been delivering the Newsletter for more years than he cares to remember. He finished his last delivery at Christmas and the BVA thanked him with a card and a small gift. I interviewed him recently and he told me that he had lived in the village since July 1947 and he purchased and started to build his house on Brookwood Lye in 1946. He lived there with his wife and they had two children, Roland and Marjorie, who both went to Brookwood School. Dick went to Woking Boys Grammar School which is now Woking police station. Dick was in the Air Force during WW2 as a wireless operator and gunner on Halifax bombers and was shot down over Germany in 1942. He spent 3 years in Prisoner of War camp’s all over Germany, being moved many times to more secure camps in order to stop him escaping, before his liberation at the end of the war. His stiff upper lip and fortitude must have helped a great deal because on his return to Blighty he became a civil servant working as a tax collector. Dick retired aged 60 and stopped working 24 years ago to spend some well deserved time relaxing with his family. Dick told me that the biggest changes that he has seen around the area have been the increase in houses and in traffic. When he moved to the area Connaught Road had a few sparse houses along its length and very few cars. Over the years the whole area has been developed beyond recognition. Dick’s daughter Marjorie died of cancer when she was only 42. His son Roland now lives in Farnham and Dick has decided to leave and move to a retirement home nearer to his son. I will still send him the Newsletter. Good luck, god bless & thanks Dick.

Fairtrade Fortnight – 6th-19th March Lots of us are increasingly concerned with where our food comes from. Did you know that Woking recently became a Fairtrade Borough? Making a positive choice to buy Fairtrade food and other Fairtrade products means that each time you shop you are making a difference to some of the poorest farmers in the world. Woking has an active Fairtrade group and each year, during Fairtrade Fortnight, they are looking for local people to host coffee mornings and wine tasting among friends, or take Fairtrade coffee to work or to their school staff room for a fortnight to give even more people an opportunity to try some of the hundreds of great Fairtrade products that are now available. If you’d like to get involved then give Brookwood resident Becca Rowland a call on 472304
Do you commute & are too busy to pray?
Can we pray for you? This is the question on a small yellow card above a box on the wall in the ticket hall at Brookwood Station. If you would like someone to pray for you and help you discover for yourself that the “box” can take your request into an unlimited spiritual dimension then let St. Saviours Church prayer group help you through difficult times. Just follow the instructions on the yellow cards and see how easy it is.
